Only they have what it takes to uncover the secrets that have imprisoned their land, but can they survive a truth more disturbing than they ever imagined?

Rose and Flynn have left the Land of the Unaltered on a mission to discover the truth behind who created the genetically engineered super army and stop it before the Rebellion is doomed. Time is ticking, but soon capital life begins to pull them in different directions. Flynn struggles to fit in with the self-indulgent and fashion obsessed populous while the expectations of Rose’s influential family tests their fragile and newly formed relationship. Will they let the capital pull them apart?

Everyone is counting on them, but in this time of discord, can they count on each other?

Secrets of the Unaltered is a Young Adult Dystopian Romance and is the second installment of The Confederation Chronicles.

Secrets of the Unaltered Confederation Chronicles Book 2 eBook Leti Del Mar

This book is the second in the Confederation series and is a YA Dystopian romance. Flynn Rivers and Rose Dartmoor are returning to the Capital of the Confederation called Citivas. They have joined the rebellion and are on a mission to infiltrate the records at the hospital and find out more about the genetically enhanced soldiers that they discovered near Eureka.

The City is full of people obsessed with their looks. They have their facial features altered for fashion. They also go to extreme lengths with colours to be fashionable. Whilst in the city, Rose's father wants her to study medicine, an extremely bright learner, Rose believes this chance may help the rebel cause.

Flynn gets a job helping out in a botany lab and learns about plants as medicines, which will help the people who live unaltered lives. But they can't find any records about the soldiers. What does the prison hide? Rose believes the prison has the answers and the pair go on a dangerous mission to the prison records room and discover just how far some of the genetic experiments have gone.

This is spine tingling tale about how far people will push for power, vanity and desperation. The story will continue in book three.

Secrets of the Unaltered Confederation Chronicles Book 2 eBook Leti Del Mar Reviews

My Thoughts….

This book was really good. We started out only a few hours after the first one ended. Rose and Flynn are on the convoy on their way back to Civitas. They are about to try and find the secrets of the capitol. Find the secrets that can also bring Civitas down for good. Can Flynn and Rose count on each other? What happens when Rose finds out just what her Father is up to? And how will she handle it?

We open right as the first one ended. The second book is still double POV which I still love. I really liked this book. The beginning was a little slow for my taste, plus I hate David. But I stuck it out and I am so glad I did. We get to see the evil that is within the capital of the confederation and just how much Rose’s father is involved. Rose and Flynn were really tested in this book. Not only as individuals but as a couple. They had to learn to trust in each other and their relationship. I was rooting for them the entire time. I mean who wouldn’t. They have to face so much together.
Both Rose and Flynn have to face their weaknesses and they are also exploited time and time again, until those weaknesses start to become their strengths.

Rose’s mother and father are freaking ridiculously good in this story. They are the definition of evil and they do it so well. They bring another element to this book that the first one just didn’t have. They each bring something different to the story and it was really interesting to read.

Like I said the beginning was slow for my but other than that the story had a good flow to it. The plot just keeps building and building. It builds so much that by the time you get to the end you are holding your breath. And what an ending that was. Such a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next one….
The premise is good. The world, characters and supporting details aren’t as fleshed out as they could be, though. A lot of time was spent on the romance between Rose and Flynn, which at times felt forced, and a large portion of the book focused on the trends of the capitol. These details, while important to draw the reader in, took up too much of the story, and weren’t as important as the discovery of the secrets they set out to reveal. I don’t think enough time was spent on planning and implementation to find those secrets. With so much focus elsewhere the story felt very shallow. There were a handful of chapters that grabbed my attention. Those were the times the reader got a glimpse into the real issues affecting this world.

Much like book 1, it moves at a slow pace, and doesn’t really pick up until the last few chapters. Things do eventually come together, as it seems the author finally finds her groove. Unfortunately, by this point the reader is already 85% into the book. Many readers may have felt the book going nowhere long before this point and abandoned it. Many big reveals happen closer to the end, but some come across with little effect. This is because the characters involved were not developed enough to really make an impact.

Grammar, spelling and sentence structure are some major issues, as well. There are a lot of mistakes. While this seems to be common in self-published books, and definitely forgivable, it is very distracting, and seriously hurts the quality.

Now, I haven’t exactly given this a sterling review, but I wouldn’t write this one off completely. Behind the plastic faces, puffy lips and monochromatic foolishness, there’s an okay story, if you are willing to give it a little time. I was able to finish this one rather quickly. It is a very quick, simple read. Some questions from the first book are answered, and the end, although a little abrupt, set up for what looks to be a more promising sequel. I am definitely interested to see where book three will go.

As far as content, this series is pretty clean so far. And by that I mean, only minor language (hell, damn), minimal violence, almost none, and no sex, though the characters do discuss it in vague terms. One character in particular is casual and shallow about the topic, but no heavy details are discussed. That being said, this is a YA book you can trust young teens and preteens to read.

Thanks to the author for the opportunity to read this book free for an honest review.
